Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections—also provides effective prevention for these conditions.
Lifestyle medicine is actually the foundation of conventional medicine. Clinical practice guidelines for the top lifestyle-related chronic diseases support lifestyle medicine as the first line of treatment, before medications.
The rise in chronic disease trends and related health care spending in the United States and in many other countries is unsustainable. Type 2 diabetes alone is a looming global pandemic with incalculable consequences.

But, there is good news.

While 80% or more of all health care spending in the U.S. is tied to the treatment of conditions rooted in unhealthy lifestyle choices, lifestyle medicine offers hope as a solution. Diseases and conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity and multiple types of cancer are among the most common and costly of all health conditions—but they are also preventable. Lifestyle medicine addresses root causes by focusing on the lifestyle choices that give rise to these diseases in the first place. When implemented, lifestyle medicine can prevent, treat, and even reverse these conditions.

Why I practice Lifestyle Medicine

My daughter had "colic from hell" with projectile vomiting >12 feet! My intuition told me, use soy formula. I learned after 9 months of hell, she was sensitive to cows milk. Giving her cows milk for 9 months, created tremendous stress in her tiny system.
My second son had multiple ear infections, 10 sets of T-tubes, lots of antibiotics. Turns out that dairy products thicken mucus and create inflammation. Removing milk and most cheeses from his diet, fixed the issue. Fortunately, he suffered minimal hearing loss.
My youngest son had a stuffy nose from about 3 weeks of age. At age 25, he told me he was always tired, had poor sleep and really was fed up with his allergies. Completing the 5R program, he felt much better in 6 months. It took him 2 years to regain all of his stamina and health and to feel what he calls- Amazing!
I was irritable and depressed - a combination of nutrient deficiency and food sensitivity. I had chronic pelvic pain, resulting in an unnecessary hysterectomy that did not correct the problem. It was unmitigated stress response.

I practice an integrated blend of Western, Functional, and nutritional medicine coupled with Mind-Body skills and coaching. Over the past 37 yrs of being a Mom and 22 years of being a Nurse Practitioner I have learned a lot...about myself, how to hear others, how to see/hear what the body needs, and how to provide the type of care I want to receive. The Colorado Center for Lifestyle Medicine does just that. I look forward to guiding and supporting you on your journey.
